Humphrey House

The Humphrey House is small but too has a history. Like others it is not as intersting and does not have too much of one! The home was built in Elkland probably around 1849. It was built for Dr. William T. Humphrey who was a native of Bainbridge, NY and a graduate of Albany Medical College. It was probably his first house when he moved from Addison, NY. He practiced in the house until 1857 when he moved to Osceola. He continued his practice there until 1897, but he was in the Army in the Civil War during three years and seven months of those. He was the 3rd, 4th, or 5th doctor ever to practice in Elkland.

After Dr. Humphrey, his son Harold owned the house and left it to his step mother, Dr. Humphrey's second wife, Jeanette, in 1877. It was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Glen Carpenter in 1935 and their daughter inherited it in 1955. She, Mrs. Elsie Elliot, still lives there.
