Kenyon Funeral Home
The Elkland Kenyon Funeral Home has also an interesting history. It once was owned by one of the most important and wealthiest people in Cowanesque Valley. Joel Parkhurst was his name and he owned SEVERAL properties in Elkland including the Dr. Eleanor Larson Donley Estate, and his most extraordinary mansion, the Parkhurst House, which sat where the Elkland Moose does now. Before the Parkhurst House was built though, around 1890, there sat on the property a yellow chief home of the Joel Parkhurst family. In 1889 the house was bought by Charles L. Kenyon, and he moved it to its current location between what are now the Young House and Western Auto. Brothers Charles L. Kenyon and Abraham Kenyon were going to use the house as a funeral home and they lived in it also. It was later bought by Charles' son Thorne A. Kenyon and he made it into apartments. The current wife of his son Charles Kenyon, had lived in one of the apartments. Charles Kenyon now owns the house and continues the family business, using the home as a funeral home.
