Coates Heritage House

Picture coming soon...

The Coates House was built many years ago. I can assume from my research that the Coates family was approximately the third wealthiest family in Elkland during this era. They were following the Parkhursts and Pattisons. We are unsure as of now as to the exact date of construction, but it was before 1875, as it is shown on the 1875 map of Elkland. It is probable that it was built by Timothy Coates who owned it at this time, but we do know that it was later owned by his son Edwin W. Coates and stayed in the coates family until the 1970's, when it became the Elkland Library. In the mid 1990's, talk came of tearing it down. Many rumors were talked of about doing various things with the land including putting in a modular home. What did happen, though, was that it was bought by Mrs. Lillian Surina, and turned into a museum. The home is now open to the public to view the many, many historic artifacts. I have received MUCH of my information from her. The inside isn't anymore all that great. Many rooms, and the inside is a greek revival style. It is, though, historic.
